All right parents it’s time for a wake-up call, ditch the flashcards, the text books, grab your kids and get your silly on! America is losing ground in the global market in everything from the value of our dollar to advances in technology, but now even our preschoolers are lagging behind. Why? Experts in early childhood education cite lack of play. You can read the full feature here.
The solution? Carve out more playtime. It might be time to start inking playtime in to our over-scheduled lives. In my ongoing quest to balance work and life this article was a good reminder of the critical role of free play in child development.
Luke’s latest request before bed (and believe me there is an ever-growing list also known as stall tactics) is to show us his dance moves. I was feeling guilty last week about acquiescing to this request–feeling like a responsible parent would encourage quiet, calm time right before bed. No, not us, in our house these days the music cranks up and Luke dances wildly, strumming his arm guitar and shouting, “I’m a rock star!” Now, I’m contented with this somewhat unorthodox ritual. I’m glad that each night before Luke falls asleep he’s had a chance to get his groove on. I’m glad that a big chunk of his day is devoted to play. And, I’m inking this post as a reminder to my future-self to keep playtime at the top of the priority list.
