All the Wrong Words

How did I miss this? The winners of this years Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest were just released. The contest is sponsored by San Jose State’s English Department and encourages writers to come up with the most ghastly opening line for a fictional novel. You can read all about the origin of the contest here

I’m stamping the date for next year’s contest on my calendar and digging through my pile of drafts collecting dust upstairs.  I think I can safely attest to the fact that anyone who has written a short story or epic novel has multiple lines which never made it to print.  Instead of shredding old drafts this contest provides a whimsical way to celebrate the creative spirit.

And now enjoy the worst opening words in 2008…

Garrison Spike composed this year’s winning entry:  “Theirs was a New York love, a checkered taxi ride burning rubber, and like the city their passion was open 24/7, steam rising from their bodies like slick streets exhaling warm, moist, white breath through manhole covers stamped ‘Forged by DeLaney Bros., Piscataway, N.J.’”
