Health Care Cannot Be Partisan

Kate with Senator Smith, a proponent of funding research.
Both senators from Oregon support health care research, one’s a democrat, the other a republican. My personal politics aside, health care shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Your voter’s registration card provides no immunity for Alzheimer’s disease, or any other disease for that matter.
Historically health care has been a divisive issue. It’s time to re-frame our attitude. We know an epidemic is looming. Without sounding like I’m making some sort of stump speech, we have to cross party lines and stand together on this issue. We have to think beyond our political affiliations and tap into that inventive American spirit.
At the forum I learned that a number of researchers are leaving the field. As funding for clinical trials has slowed, young scientists are pursuing other career paths. Now is the time to invest in our future.
Okay, sorry that did end up sounding kind of stumpy, but can you blame me it’s the only thing on TV these days. It must be catching.

Hi Kate,
I find it really sad that a country won’t take care of their sick. I’m not too familiar with the US medical system but I have heard many stories like yours and it breaks my heart. I’m from Canada and thankfully we have a national medicare system. It’s not the best and it certainly has flaws but we can at least count on basic medical care without spending our life savings. My heart goes out to you. Keep fighting, you will make a difference.

Hey Paul,
Thanks for stopping by the blog and your comments. I think national health care should be our number priority in the US, but unfortunately I’m not in the majority. We could learn much from your system. Of course as you mention every system has issues, but ours has gapping holes. My family was actually lucky in that my dad had the safety net of retirement funds to tap into, there are millions of Americans that have nothing.
Cheers,
Kate
