Editors who moonlight as therapists

Last week I met with Jessica Morrell for coffee after her careful review of my manuscript.  I must start by sending an apology out to the universe to all authors who have come before me, specifically regarding their “acknowledgement” sections.  Admittedly I’m a book geek.  I’ve always read the small details included in books.  I like to know where authors live, and what they feed their cats for breakfast.  In the past I’ve often complained about how much billing authors give their editors.  It seemed self-indulgent and overdone.  I’m sorry.  I was wrong, and I pledge to reform.

Jessica has such a keen eye.  She was quickly able to focus in on points that needed strengthening.  I joked later with Gordy that it was like a great counseling session.  None of her suggestions changed the structure or guts of the book, rather offered ideas for tightening and enhancing it.  I’ve been amazed how adding and trimming a few sentence can amplify the story.  Without a doubt when the book is in print, I’ll be thanking her profusely for her wise and graceful input.
