Fresh Eyes

Seems like it’s about time for another book update.  I have the full manuscript out to a number of agents.  Now I wait–I see more of my girlfriends, I swim every morning, but mostly I strongly resist the urge to tinker with my manuscript.  This plays out more like Gordy yelling up the stairs to me, “Kate what are you doing up there?  You’re not touching your book are you?”

To which I innocently reply back, “The book No, no of course not,” pause as I quickly slam my laptop shut and continue, “I’m just painting my toenails.”

“That’s the third time you’ve painted them this week!”

“Well a girl can change her mind about color right?”

The thing is I know he’s right.  I keep reminding myself that it’s important to take breaks.  That when I do revisit the manuscript I’ll have fresh eyes.  That most agents will have feedback, edits, and all sorts of suggestions on how to strengthen the work.  That I should enjoy this reprieve from writing because I’ll be back at it, grinding away all too soon.  Of course telling myself and resisting the urge to sneak a peak are two very different issues.

Seriously, my toes have never looked better.
