I know, I know, I’m sure some of you are sick of hearing my constant Alzheimer’s updates, but the Alzheimer’s Association has released their 2008 report. I had to share, as I think it is really staggering. The Association is predicting that over 10 million Baby Boomers will contract the disease in the coming years. I can’t even begin to image the toll this will take on our health-care system, not to mention caregivers.
I’ve been doing a calling campaign to care facilities this week for the Alzheimer’s Association, and I can’t believe how many facilities there are just in the Portland area. It’s terrifying to think about the fact that even with these vast numbers of facilities, families often must be placed on waiting lists for care. We are not equipped as a nation to deal with this growing epidemic. Hopefully the next President (insert Obama or Clinton here) will make this a top priority!

That is a sobering number.
My fiancee is an L&D nurse, but before that she was a nurse on an Alzheimer’s ward. She loved the job but was frustrated at how hopelessly underfunded they were.
Hi Jamie,
Thanks for stopping by, and yes sobering is the perfect word for the growing number of people living with the disease. Your fiancée is spot on in terms of funding and services.
Kate
Never heard of it before, but after reading this can say with assurance, that it’s a point of great interest and fun for me
